Gross Domestic Product by County, 2020

Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased in 864 counties, decreased in 2,234 counties, and was unchanged in 14 counties in 2020. The percent change in real GDP ranged from 91.0 percent in Foard County, TX, to –29.0 percent in Skagway Municipality, AK. GDP estimates were impacted by the response to the spread of COVID-19, as governments issued and lifted “stay-at-home” orders. The full economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic cannot be quantified in the county GDP estimates, because the impacts are generally embedded in source data and cannot be separately identified.

• For counties with populations greater than 500,000, Santa Clara County, CA (4.4 percent), was the fastest growing county. Queens County, NY (–11.2 percent), had the largest percent decrease in GDP.
• For counties with populations between 100,000 and 500,000, Guadalupe County, TX (5.9 percent), was the fastest growing county. Clayton County, GA (–24.3 percent), had the largest percent decrease in GDP.
• For counties with populations less than 100,000, Foard County, TX (91.0 percent), was the fastest growing county. Skagway Municipality, AK (–29.0 percent), had the largest percent decrease in GDP
