New research statistics about foreign direct investment in states, metro areas, and counties are available through a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
BEA and BLS combined their data to provide information about each state or local area’s employment at companies with foreign ownership, including:
- Average annual employment.
- Wage statistics.
- Occupations.
- Percent of each area’s employment attributable to foreign ownership.
- Wage ratio of foreign-owned to domestically owned companies.
Foreign ownership is defined as an establishment having at least one foreign owner with at least 10 percent ownership.
The data, for the year 2012, are on the BLS website at www.bls.gov/fdi. BEA and BLS are exploring the possibility of producing these statistics for a more recent period.
If you have questions or comments about this data, please submit them at: https://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/forms/fdi. If regular updates of these data would be helpful to you, please let us know.
