FOR WIRE TRANSMISSION: 9:00 A.M. EST, TUESDAY, JANUARY 28, 1997 Duke Tran: (202) 606-5344 (Analysis) BEA 97-01 Marian Sacks: 606-9274 (Estimates) STATE PERSONAL INCOME: THIRD QUARTER 1996 Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, and Washington led the nation in personal income growth in the third quarter of 1996, according to estimates released by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis. The fast growth in personal income in these states mainly reflected strong increases in earnings. For the nation, personal income increased 1.4 percent in the third quarter of 1996. The increase in personal income was 1.0 percentage point more than the 0.4-percent increase in prices paid by U.S. consumers, as measured by the price index for personal consumption expenditures. All 50 states had increases in personal income that exceeded the increase in prices. Fastest growing states Personal income increased 2.3 percent in Nevada, 2.0 percent in Arizona, and 1.9 percent in Georgia and Washington. In all four states, the increases in personal income were 0.5 percentage point or more above the U.S. average of 1.4 percent. In Nevada, personal income growth was boosted by above-average increases in earnings in construction, government, and durable goods manufacturing. In addition, earnings increases were above average in services, trade, and mining. In Arizona, Georgia, and Washington, personal income growth was boosted by above-average increases in earnings in services and farming; in Washington, personal income growth was also boosted by an above-average increase in earnings in durable goods manufacturing. In addition, in Arizona, earnings increases were above average in durable goods manufacturing and government. In Georgia, retail trade earnings increased at an above-average rate. In Washington, earnings increases were above average in nondurable goods manufacturing, wholesale trade, and mining. Personal income increased 0.6 percent in Alaska, 0.7 percent in Hawaii, and 0.8 percent in West Virginia. In all three states, personal income growth was dampened by weakness in government earnings. In Alaska, weakness in earnings in mining, finance, insurance, and real estate, and retail trade dampened personal income growth; a below-average increase in transfer payments also dampened income growth. In Hawaii, a decline in construction earnings dampened income growth; in addition, earnings either declined or increased at below-average rates in trade, finance, insurance, and real estate, nondurable goods manufacturing, and mining. In West Virginia, declines in earnings in mining and transportation and public utilities dampened income growth; in addition, earnings either declined or increased at a below-average rate in retail trade and finance, insurance, and real estate. Transfer payments in West Virginia increased at a below-average rate. Personal income increased 0.8 percent in Indiana and 0.9 percent in Michigan and Missouri. In all three states, personal income growth was dampened by declines in earnings in durable goods manufacturing. In Indiana, personal income growth was dampened by weakness in earnings in government, nondurable goods manufacturing, and transportation and public utilities; in addition, mining earnings declined. In Michigan, a below-average increase in transfer payments dampened income growth. In Missouri, personal income growth was dampened by a below-average increase in government earnings; in addition, earnings either declined or increased at below-average rates in nondurable goods manufacturing, construction, and retail trade. In Montana, personal income increased 0.9 percent. Personal income growth was dampened by weakness in earnings in farming, construction, transportation and public utilities, and trade. In addition, earnings declined in both durable goods and nondurable goods manufacturing and in mining. Personal income is the sum of earnings (private and government wage and salary disbursements, other labor income, and farm and nonfarm proprietors' income), rental income of persons, personal dividend income, personal interest income, and transfer payments, less personal contributions for social insurance. Personal income is measured before the deduction of personal income taxes and other personal taxes and is reported in current dollars (no adjustment is made for price changes). The personal income level for the United States in this release is derived as the sum of the state estimates; it differs from the national income and product accounts (NIPA) estimate of personal income because, by definition, it omits the earnings of federal civilian and military personnel stationed abroad and of U.S. residents employed abroad temporarily by private U.S. firms. It can also differ from the NIPA estimate because of different revision schedules. * * * BEA estimates are available in several forms besides the printed news releases.
